It's not your typical weed problem. More than 150 wild growing pot plants were discovered to be growing out in rural Doran, Minnesota just south of Breckenridge.  

Doran Minnesota is a farming community. But unlike most farmers and their weed problems, these weeds are the most commonly illicit drugs in the United States. "We received a call last night from a complainant that there was a possible marijuana growing down in the city of Doran. Our deputy went down and did find in fact that it was marijuana. 153 plants they pulled up," says Wilkin County Sheriff Rick Fiedlar.

There have been reports that marijuana plants have grown in the wild of Wilkin and Richland Counties for decades. Sheriff Fiedlar says it was probably growing naturally in the wild. His station typically gets a couple cases like this a year, "we're not sure of the quality of the marijuana but we think it may be left over from years back from a controlled growth. Back... We're not exactly sure."

Tests concluded it's the real deal, the leaves contain T-H-C which is the active chemical found in pot. But authorities are saying the fact that it was growing out in the wild like this suggests it probably wasn't being harvested. Sheriff Fiedlar explains, "we don't think this was a grow, a major grow you know. Most of the grows that happen are usually inside you know well taken care of under grow lights and things like that."

It's all been uprooted now, there's no more wild growing pot out here. But the Sheriffs Office says there's no guarantee that it won't come back again.

No one was arrested or blamed for this growth. But if you find it growing on your land and don't call police you could be charged. Narcotics officers say they believe these plants were planted years ago back when they had issues with drugs in that area.

As for the potency of ditch weed? Authorities say it is something you could get high on, but it's generally not the same high quality type of potent marijuana.

The Wilkin County, Minnesota, Sheriff's Department is looking for information about some sort of marijuana grow operation.

Deputies were tipped off about some suspicious plants that turned out to be pot.  They found 152 plants in Doran, Minnesota. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Wilkin County Sheriff's Office at (218)643-8544.
