Smock Records Top Qualifying Triple Jump Mark at U.S. Olympic Trials on Saturday

EUGENE, Ore.--Former North Dakota State University All-American Amanda (Thieschafer) Smock recorded the top qualifying mark of 45-feet, 3-1/2 inches on her second attempt in the triple jump competition at the U.S. Olympic Trials held Saturday, June 23, at Hayward Field.
Smock, affiliated with the New York Athletic Club, leads a field of 12 into the U.S. Olympic Trials triple jump finals 7:45 p.m. (Central) on Monday, June 25. She was a three-time NCAA Division II national champion and 13-time All-American from 2001-04 at North Dakota State.
Sheena Gordon, competing unattached, was second at 44-feet, 10-1/4 inch, while Oregon's Lauryn Newson and Andrea Geubelle of Kansas finished in third and fourth place with a mark of 44-feet, 4-1/4 inch on their first attempts.
Riley Dolezal (2005-09) placed 17th in the javelin throw with a mark of 232-feet, 2-inches, and didn't advance to Monday's finals in the event. Timothy Glover of Illinois State had the best qualifying mark of 263-feet, 4-inches, while Texas A&M's Sam Humphreys was second at 256-feet, 3-inches.
North Dakota State senior Leslie Brost was scheduled to compete in the women's pole vault preliminaries Friday, but rain postponed the event. All 24 women will compete in the final round Sunday, June 25, beginning at 3 p.m. (Central).
Former NDSU All-American Laura (Hermanson) Januszewski was eliminated from the 800-meter run in the first round of qualifying at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Friday.
