Going Great Lengths For Food Donations

Posted: Updated:

Letting nothing go to waste. We brought you a story on Wednesday morning about a man's drive to end the hunger crisis through dumpster diving. A local food bank caught our story and they told us even though they don't go quite that far, they are using all of their resources to make sure millions of people don't go to bed hungry.

They may not go to the extreme of diving into a dumpster, but here at great plains food bank they do go great lengths to collect unwanted food. "We collect food in different ways," says Marcia Paulson, with Great Plains Food Bank.

From driving a truck to local bakeries to pick up leftover goods to accepting donations. They keep the shelves here stacked. "Products that were once going to waste are now going to people's mouth," says Paulson. It's thanks to the donations that last year, the food bank provided more than five million meals and Paulson says they hope the donations continue to come in. "We are always looking for food," says Paulson. If you think you can't make a difference, just $1 can serve up to four meals and one can  make a whole lot of difference.

"Because of donations we fed individuals all over the state. 40% of them being kids," says Paulson. Paulson says the food bank is always in need of food, non perishable items and for those who may farm, "It's growing season here so any one with extra produce well take it," says Paulson. Because for 30 years, the Great Plains food bank has served those in need and they'll continue to do so, no matter what.
