Picking Up The Pieces After Hail Storm

Posted: Updated:

People in Lakes country are picking up the pieces after that same storm dropped large hail and wind ripped through Tuesday afternoon. Some spent the day cleaning up the mess and examining just how much damage was done to their property.

It may not be hail pounding down on top of Tracy Borash's house, but it is thanks to mother nature that these guys are on the roof working away.

"Shingles were damaged bad, and they're putting a tarp on the house where the skylights were," says Borash. Tracy says she wasn't home at the time the storm came rumbling in, but when she arrived to her house, it was clear just how bad the weather was. "Are skylights were all broken in the kitchen and there was a mess." And in the backyard, a boat with seats torn apart. "People at the business across the street said there was hail as big as a tennis ball," says Borash.

From roof damage to crop damage, residents along County road 6 say last night's hail storm was the worst hail storm they've ever seen. "The ground was covered in hail." Richard Umber says his corn and soybeans have been growing nice and tall, that was until Tuesday. "Beans broke over and the leaves broke off," says Umber.

Umber says he still has to examine all 350 acres to know exactly how much damage was done, he just hopes that's the last storm he'll have to deal with until after harvest. "I've been here 38 years and this is the first time I've had damage," says Umber.

We also spoke with a few auto repair shops in Detroit Lakes, who say they're seeing a lot of people come in with broken windshields that need to be repaired.
