Motorcycle Crash Victim Dies

Posted: Updated:

After a devastating crash put him in the hospital for days, a motorcycle driver has lost his fight. Jason Viestenz has died, two weeks after the motorcycle he and his son were riding collided with a semi.

It's a normal scene here at the 2300 block of 25th street south in Fargo. Cars go, once the light turns green. But it was just 2 weeks ago, when the light here turned green and moments later, a crash. "Both were traveling in the southbound lane. The truck attempted to take a right hand turn on to 23rd street to travel west and he went into both of the lanes," says Lt. Joel Vettel with the Fargo Police Department.

Lt.Vettel says the motorcycle that was carrying Jason Viestenz and his 10 year old son was traveling in the far left lane "The truck went into the other lane and when the motorcycle was in the far lane, there was in impact," says Vettel. "We do have street lights with a camera with an aerial view which we're looking at. We are also looking at all factors, from speed to road conditions," says Vettel.

The case is still under investigation and it is yet to be determined whether or not the driver of the truck will face any charges. But Vettel does say that a lesson can be learned from this tragedy. "We never blame victims but we learn from tragedies and any time someone loses their life we need to take something away from it. It's pretty obvious that you have two individuals, the one person who wears a helmet walks away, the other person with out one dies," says Vettel. Vettel says that speaks volume for the need of helmets and that helmets do save lives.

We did speak to the family of James Viestenz earlier today and they weren't ready to go on camera at this time. Lt. Vettel says it may be a few weeks until they know for sure if the state attorney will file charges on this case.
