Flood Tax Recount A Possibility

Posted: Updated:

A half cent sales tax for flood and infrastructure projects in Fargo was approved in yesterday's election by a close margin. As it stands right now, there won't be a recall, but in a few days that could change.

The half cent sales tax that would go towards flood and infrastructure projects in Fargo won approval in Tuesday's election, but just barely. To pass, it needed a 60% super majority and it got just .29% more than that. With that close of a vote, many are wondering about a recount.

Fargo City Auditor, Steve Sprague, says, "The whole process is pretty straight forward. People voted and want the sales tax so it looks like the sales tax will go forward."

Fargo City Auditor Steve Sprague say there needs to be less than 60.25 % of votes for a auto recall. Mayor Dennis Walaker says he feels people made a great decision to approve the tax and that if there were to be a recount, he's not concerned because electronic systems have few errors. For now, they're waiting on absentee votes and canvassing to make the final call.

Sprague says, "Typically, it doesn't change it much because let's say you have 4 ballots that you review. Two will be for and two will be against and you end up with no change."

On Monday, when all the absentee votes are in, they'll tally them up and see there's enough for a recount.

Going off the current approval, Mayor Walaker says the money that will be generated from the tax will be well spent improving the city, including flood protection projects.
