Mentor Drowning

A woman died after jumping off a pontoon boat into Maple Lake near Mentor in northwestern Minnesota.

The Polk County sheriff's office says it received a 911 call at 1:45 a.m. Sunday reporting that a woman had jumped off the boat and couldn't be located.

Mentor Fire and Rescue sent boats onto the lake. At 2:45 a.m., 55-year-old Cindy Hanson of rural Beltrami was found and brought to shore. Attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful. An autopsy is pending.

Mankato Drowning

Authorities say a Mankato man who drowned in a popular swimming spot has been identified.

Capt. Rich Murry of the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Department says 23-three-year-old Madi Omot Nyigow was swimming with friends Saturday at Hiniker Pond.

He was seen going under shortly after 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Mankato police recovered him just before 7 p.m. He was pronounced dead at a Mankato hospital.

Murry told the The Free Press of Mankato on Sunday that an autopsy will be done. It's not yet known whether alcohol or health issues factored into Nyigow's death.

Cedar Lake Rescue

Authorities have pulled a girl from Cedar Lake in Minneapolis.

KMSP-TV reports the girl was submerged for nearly 40 minutes Sunday afternoon. The Hennepin County sheriff's office is calling the incident a "near-drowning." Her condition was not immediately known.

The girl was playing on a floating dock and did not reappear after jumping in the water.

Witnesses called 911. Emergency crews reached scene ten minutes after she went under. They performed CPR at the scene before transporting her to an area hospital.

Cedar Lake is part of the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes.

Alma Dam Rescue

A Minnesota man and his two dogs survived a harrowing trip over a dam on the swollen Mississippi River.

The Buffalo County Sheriff's Department says 49-year-old John Amundson, of Winona, took his dogs boating above the lock and dam at Alma when his motor quit Saturday afternoon.

WEAU-TV reports he tried to paddle clear but the current was too strong and it pulled him into the dam. He put on a life jacket and grabbed a seat cushion as he went over. His boat capsized but he floated to the surface and climbed the al to safety. He rescued his dogs with the help of lock workers and a game warden.

Deputies say boaters should be careful with the fast current and high waters on the Mississippi.

Lake Pepin Search

Searchers are trying to find a 38-year-old man who fell overboard on Lake Pepin.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department was notified of the missing man around 6:15 p.m. Saturday. Officials say the man had been boating east of the village of Bay City. His wife reported she saw him fall overboard, jumped into the water to try and save him but saw him go under water.

The sheriff's office says the 36-year-old woman swam to shore and walked to a residence to call for help.

WCCO-TV reports that searchers recovered the boat Saturday but no body. The search resumed Sunday. The victim's name has not been released.

Lake Pepin is a wide spot on the Mississippi River on the Wisconsin-Minnesota border.

Burntside Lake Death

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of an Ely man who was found dead in the water near his cabin on Burntside Lake.

Fifty-year-old Daniel Frank Scufsa had last been seen late Thursday. He was found dead Friday.

The sheriff's office says his death is not considered suspicious, but it will remain under investigation until autopsy results are available.

Lake Independence Drowning

Authorities have identified a man who died in a western Hennepin County lake.

The medical examiner said Sunday that 67-year-old Charles Dollar drowned Thursday on Lake Independence. His death was ruled an accident.

Dollar was reported missing Thursday night after going fishing alone that morning. His boat was later found adrift on the lake. A diver found his body in about 6½ feet of murky water Friday near the Baker Park boat launch.
