3 Injured When Car Hits Tree

Posted: Updated:

Police believe speed and alcohol were a factor in an early morning crash that injured three people in south Moorhead. It happened around 1:30 Monday morning when a maroon 1999 Olds Achieva went off of 5th Street at 2nd Avenue South and smashed into a tree.

Two of the passengers were already out and walking around when police arrived, but the driver was trapped in the car.

Lisa Sheeley, 25, of Fargo and 31-year-old Cynthia Butcher of Moorhead were treated and released from Sanford Health. Police say the driver Cory McKay, 33, of Fargo received substantial injuries, but are not believed to be life threatening.

McKay is facing charges of DUI, driving without a license, and not wearing a seatbelt. The two passengers were wearing their seatbelts and it is believed their injuries would have been significantly more substantial had they chose not to put them on.

The Moorhead Police Department is currently investigating the crash and was assisted on scene by FM Ambulance, Moorhead Fire, and the Clay County Sheriff's Department.
