Pools Busy with Above Average Temps

Posted: Updated:

We've certainly been feeling the heat early this year. For the past couple of days we've been hitting temperatures about 10 degrees above average, and plenty of people are getting out and enjoying summer early.

It's every grandparent's duty to spoil the grand kids. Dwayne Olchlager chooses to do his baby sitting detail poolside. He says, "They wanted to hurry up and get over here before I even got dressed."

Pools in the area are seeing impressive numbers for it being the start of summer. Nearly 375 people were here at the Northside pool yesterday compared to about 150 at this time last year.

Right now is probably the best time to get out and enjoy the weather as we'll be hitting the mid to upper 80's and even the 90's heading into the weekend. With that comes increased humidity, which could make it uncomfortable for some, not to mention dangerous, if you're not careful.

Chad Mickelson of F-M Ambulance says, "Listen to your body, and if you start getting exhausted, take a break, shut off the lawn mower. Stop doing what you're doing."

Make sure you're drinking plenty of water, even if you're not thirsty. Also apply sunscreen. It's a lot harder for your body to cool off with sunburn. And most of all, keep an eye on the kids.

Mickelson says, "They're out there running around, and they don't like to take breaks."

So as any good grandparent would do, Dwayne says, "We'll sit down here in a little bit." And there's always a pretty tasty treat that goes along with the break.

There are some symptoms you should watch for when out in the heat. If you have muscle cramps, extreme thirst, headaches or stop sweating, make sure to take breaks from the sun.
