Working to move flood buyout homes

Posted: Updated:

Working against the clock. A deadline to move flood buyout homes has movers working seven days a week. But some say there just isn't enough time to get the job done before time runs out. John Schmidt hasn't had much time to rest lately.

"We're a little swamped right now," says John Schmidt, co-owner of Schmidt and Sons Building Movers. Schmidt's been working seven days a week moving homes just like this. "They are flood buyout homes," says Schmidt.

The homes are all located in Fargo, Moorhead, Cass and Clay counties. In total, building movers are working hard to relocate about sixty homes. "We're working as much as we can with no free time," says Skylar Schmidt, co-owner of Schmidt and Sons Building Movers.

The reason movers are working seven days a week is because they have a deadline to meet. If the homes aren't moved by June 30th, the remaining homes will come face to face with one of these. "There's not enough movers. Some of these homes will get demolished if they are not moved. There's just not enough time which is unfortunate," says Schmidt.

Schmidt says it can take about 4 days to move just one home. "An extension would be better then there homes getting smashed," says Schmidt. But for now, Schmidt and the rest of the movers in town will continue to work against the clock before its to late. "Someone's gotta do it," says Schmidt. The June 30th deadline is in place so the cities and counties can start work on building dikes.
