Summer Backpack Program Begins

Posted: Updated:

John Deere Electronic Solutions - Phoenix International is partnering with United Way of Cass-Clay and the Great Plains Food Bank to pilot a new summer backpack food program focused on ensuring local students are not hungry throughout the summer of 2012.

To celebrate the 175th anniversary of John Deere, the company will provide food, volunteers, and financial support to fill, pack and deliver 500 backpacks each week for 12 weeks throughout the summer of 2012. The program will cover the previously unmet needs of six area schools including Horace Mann, Washington, Madison, Jefferson, Lincoln and McKinley in Fargo. By September 2012, 6,000 backpacks of food will be delivered to local children impacted by hunger.

In addition to the contributions made at the local level, the John Deere Foundation provided $7,000 in funding to the FM Hunger Coalition earlier this year.

On Tuesday, June 5, 2012, United Way of Cass-Clay will hold a media event at the Great Plains Food Bank at 1:00 pm to kick off the 2012 summer pilot project. To celebrate the launch of the project, John Deere Electronic Solutions – Phoenix International General Manager Tom Budan and members of his leadership team will be volunteering to fill the first several hundred backpacks with food. The Cass BackPack Program is a Great Plains Food Bank program supported by United Way of Cass-Clay that distributes child-friendly, nonperishable and easily consumed food packages to local students throughout Cass & Clay Counties on weekends when school lunches aren't available.
