Dakotas tribes get federal grants

Posted: Updated:

Two American Indian tribes in the Dakotas are getting grants through a federal environmental program.

The Environment Protection Agency is giving $200,000 each to the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and the Standing Rock Sioux. The money is part of $69 million in grants being doled out to clean and develop contaminated properties, protect public health and create jobs.

The Turtle Mountain tribe will use the money to clean up an abandoned administration building near Belcourt that is contaminated by mold and unknown chemicals.

The Standing Rock tribe will use its grant to clean up the Smee School teachers' quarters in Wakpala. The EPA says the site is contaminated with heavy metals and inorganic compounds.
