Police Stress Seatbelts

Posted: Updated:

Police across North Dakota and Minnesota in collaboration with the Department of Transportation in both states are urging drivers and passengers to buckle up, as part of the national "Click it or Ticket" campaign. Not only during the upcoming holiday weekend but all the time.

Law enforcement say they see crashes way to often where death and injury could have easily been avoided if the occupants of the vehicle were only wearing seatbelts. They add that drivers are 75 percent less likely to be killed in a rollover crash if they are buckled up.

The statistics from the ND-DOT in 2011 are also alarming:

  • One unbelted occupant died every five days, as compared to one every 8.3 days in 2010.
  • 40 percent of the applicable fatalities were either totally or partially ejected from the vehicle.
  • one crash occurred every 28 minutes.
  • One person was injured in a crash every 1.7 hours.

As of yesterday Fargo police have already written several tickets to drivers for not wearing their seatbelts and will be out in force throughout the holiday weekend.
