Work Zone Awareness Day - Valley News Live - KVLY/KXJB - Fargo/Grand Forks

Work Zone Awareness Day

Posted: Updated:

Today marks work zone awareness day in North Dakota. Last year the DOT recorded 203 crashes in work zones across the state and wants to keep that number down.

With the mild spring weather and lack of flooding this season construction zones have started to pop up all over. The North Dakota DOT alone has over 200 projects this summer.

Big reminders on how to stay safe in work zones include:

  • Stay alert and minimize distractions: Never use a cell phone or texting while driving. Dedicate your full attention to the roadway.
  • Expect the unexpected: Traffic lanes may be closed, narrowed, or shifted, and people may be working on or near the road.
  • Slow down and don't tailgate: Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes; obey posted speed limits. And the most common crash in a highway work zone is the rear end collision.
  • Pay attention to signs: The warning signs (typically orange) are there to help drivers move safely through the work zone.
  • Obey the flaggers: The flagger knows what is best for moving traffic safely.
  • Be patient and stay calm: Remember, the work zone means improvements to the road that will make your future drive better.
  • Know the road rules for work zones.
  • Keep a safe distance from workers and their equipment.
  • Keep up with the flow of traffic: Motorists can help maintain traffic flow and posted speeds by merging smoothly.
  • Schedule enough time to drive safely: Expect delays and leave early.
