Restorative Justice Seeks to Heal Hurt

Posted: Updated:

Workers who want to heal the hurt between victims of crime and the people who made them that way are coming to Cass County.

Lutheran Social Services is reaching out to victim advocacy groups in the region to see if their clients want to participate in the restorative justice program.

The program gets victims face to face with criminals in a controlled environment.

It can bring closure and sometimes even get a victim paid back what the criminal owes them.

It isn't a way to skirt the legal system.

"The program isn't recognized by the courts, in order to get x years knocked off a sentence," says Lutheran Social Services' Joel Friesz.

The program was originally designed only for juvenile offenders, which is how it's used in clay county currently.

It's used primarily for property crime cases in North Dakota, and it's got to be initiated by the victim.
