MN Couple in Cruise Ship Disaster Identified

Posted: Updated:

The bodies of an American couple killed when the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia capsized earlier this year have been identified.

Italian officials say the bodies of Barbara and Gerald Heil, from White Bear Lake, Minnesota were among five bodies recovered from the ship last month. The Interior ministry posting also identified Christina Mathi Ganz and Norbert Josef Ganz, of Germany, and an Italian crewman after weeks of DNA testing and other exams.

Divers are still searching the wreck for a female Italian passenger and an Indian crewman who are missing and presumed dead. The two have already been included in the death toll of 32.

The Costa Concordia capsized off the Italian island of Giglio after hitting rocks on January 13. The cruise ship's captain is currently under house arrest, as prosecutors work to charge him with manslaughter. They say he caused the shipwreck, then abandoned it.
