Five escape Fargo Town Home Fire

Posted: Updated:

BREAKING NEWS:  Fire crews were called to a fire around 4:20 Thursday morning at 141 Prairewood Drive South in Fargo.  People there report flames and smoke shooting out of the roof.  At one point, the flames were so large people driving on the interstate were calling 911.

According to Fargo Fire Captain Bob Cuchna, unit B is where the fire started and the upstairs of that unit will be a total loss.  Cuchna says, the fire began to spread into the attic of the unit next door, but firefighters were able to knock it down quickly. The connected unit has smoke and water damage.

The two people in unit B where the fire started say they woke up to the smell of smoke and their door was hot. One of the people in unit B suffered second degree burns and ended up jumping out of the second story window. Emergency crews say the man sprained his ankle from the jump.

The people in unit B yelled at the three people in the neighboring town home to wake them, and called 911. Thankfully all five people were able to get out safely.

The fire was out shortly after 5:00a.m. but crews will be on scene much of the morning keeping an eye on hot spots. Homeowners tell Valley News Live it could be an electrical problem, noting they've gone through dozens of light bulbs in the last month or so. Investigators are the town home and are working to confirm what the exact cause of the fire is.

All five people living in the two units are displaced and Red Cross is assisting with food, water and shelter.  The Salvation Army also assisted at the scene.
