Shelter Takes In And Helps Deformed Cat

Posted: Updated:

A Fargo animal rescue has taken in a cat with a twisted story. His name is Corky, and he was born with an abnormality that fits his name.

"He's a sweet little boy and took all of our hearts real quickly," says Gail Ventzke with CATS Cradle Shelter.

"I just love him. He just reaches deep into your heart," adds Carol Stefonek with CATS Cradle Shelter.

Every animal that comes through CATS Cradle's doors touches Gail and Carol's souls.

Gail says, "We were almost in tears when we saw him."

"We bundled him up in our arms immediately and said he's ours," says Carol.

If it weren't for the shelter, Corky was destined to be put down. He's like any other cat up top, but on his bottom half you can see where he gets his name. A birth defect caused his legs to criss cross and turn around.

Carol says, "As far as Corky's concerned, he's just a regular cat."

He's your average, sweet house cat. If there's a lap to sit on, he's on it.

Gail says, "He loves to purr. He loves to play, and he gets around pretty good."

Corky definitely has his head on straight... Now, they're working on doing the same to his legs, but that wasn't always the plan. Originally, they thought amputation was the only option, but vets are thinking that his legs could be aligned. The shelter's hoping the University of Minnesota will have more answers and that donations will help make surgeries possible.

Gail says, "We're going to do everything we can to give him the best quality of life we can."

A chance at turning Corky's legs and life around.

Every year, more than 400 cats are euthanized in the FM area, but since CATS Cradle opened in January, none have been put down. If you'd like to help corky or the shelter, they're having a fundraiser tonight (Thursday) at the Garage Bar in Moorhead starting at 6:30.
