Former football coach Erhardt dies

Former North Dakota State University head football coach and athletic director Ron Erhardt has died.

NDSU released a statement saying Erhardt died Wednesday. He was 80. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Erhardt was the NDSU coach from 1966 to 1972. He served as assistant from 1963 to 1965.

Erhardt ended his career as the winningest coach in Bison history with a 61-7-1 record.

After his career at NDSU, he served as head coach of the New England Patriots before offensive coordinator positions with the New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets.

He retired from coaching professional football in January 1998.

Erhardt is survived by his wife, Anita, four children and eight grandchildren.
