South Fargo Motel Fire

Posted: Updated:

A fire broke out at the Grand Inn Motel at 3402 14th Avenue South in South Fargo where a fire ignited inside a room.

Firefighters say it started in a corner room on the bottom floor when a man who was using an oxygen tank lit a cigarette. The man was able to escape but suffered from smoke inhalation and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The rest of the motel was evacuated, however one man was trapped in his room directly above where the fire started.

Assistant Chief, Leroy Skarlokenm says, "H felt it wasn't safe to exit his room into the hallway because of the heavy smoke in the hallway, so we took him out of the second floor with the ladder. He was fine. There was nothing wrong with him."

Skarloken says concrete blocks in the building's structure helped contain the fire to the room where it started, but many rooms have smoke damage. Between one third and one fourth of the motel occupants are displaced, but were given rooms at another hotel.
