UPDATE 8:58 PM by Emily Welker
A North Fargo family has extra reason to hold tight to one another after their two sons barely escaped a fast-moving fire at their home.
The two boys were home alone at the home in the 3100 block of 8th street North after their mother had gone to work and their father was traveling out of town.
The boys say they had just wrapped up a game on the XBox when the younger, Ethan Aguilar, noticed the house started to fill with smoke.
"We were trying to figure out where the smoke was coming from, so we went to the garage door. When we opened it we saw it was all smoky. So we slammed the door shut," said Ethan.
The kids ran for the fire extinguisher and called their mom, Jennifer Krueger, who told them to grab the dog and get out. She began calling 911, but for some reason the calls wouldn't go through. When she called back, both boys and dog were safely outdoors, and the fire department was on its way, thanks to Ethan.
"I am very proud of my boys, yes," says Krueger. "I'm just thankful they're okay. "
Firefighters were able to keep most of the fire damage out of the home, but the garage was almost completely destroyed. They say it'll be some time before they can determine a cause, both for the original source of the fire and for what created the sounds of explosions coming from the garage reported by eyewitnesses. Firefighters say they're delighted the mission was a property-saving mission, rather than a lifesaving one.
"Amazing," says Fargo firefighter Matt Nelson. "My hat's off to them."
