Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills made it awful to be outside today. At some points, it felt like negative 35 degrees in the Valley. We've been spoiled this year with higher than average temperatures, and it seems like we've been reaching 30 degrees on a regular basis. This is only the 2nd really cold spell of the season, and even though we all expected it, many say it's still hard to get used to.
David Duval of Fargo say, "He wants to get moving because he doesn't like to stand around when it's cold like this."
It's a daily routine for David Duval and his pup Moe, but today, they're both bundled up.
Duval says, "He's got on a wool sweater that my daughter knit for him."
The National Weather Service issued an extreme cold warning for the valley, and it's put a damper on a lot of people's plans. Dirk Brevik volunteers at Bethany Retirement and walks therapy dogs Marcus and Sasha on a regular basis. Usually they're out for an hour... But not today.
Dirk Brevik of Fargo says, "One of the colder days, that's for sure. Throughout the course of this winter, we haven't had too many that were this biting."
Marcus and Sasha were only out for a few minutes today, but if you look closely, you can see ice crystals actually starting to form around their mouths, and it's important to get them inside as soon as possible.
Brevik says, "Usually, we'll go for a little further to the park, but today it's just around the block."
While these temps come as a shock, they're more seasonable for mid-February... But it won't keep David and Moe from getting in their workout.
Duval says, "We like to get out and walk this guy. He's about 100 pounds and needs the exercise."
Tonight's supposed to be another cold one so it's important to dress for it. Boots, snow pants, a jacket, gloves, a hat and even a face mask should be worn if you have to be outside for more than a few minutes at a time.
