Smart Phones Aid Kid's Diagnosis

Posted: Updated:

In 2011, more than 80% of US physicians owned a smart phone and, by now, an estimated 60% also use an iPad, while at least 40% of US doctors claim to go online during patient consultations, mostly with smart phones (Manhattan Research).

There are apps to test your vision and determine if a visit to the optometrist is in order. A voice-activated nutrition app translates food options into healthier alternatives. A blood-glucose monitoring system app will let diabetics monitor blood sugar on-the-go. And an app equipped with emergency buttons can find or track an individual's location -- a helpful tool for Alzheimer's sufferers and their families.

But some smart moms are using their smart phones to help doctors diagnose their kids illnesses.

Valley News Live's Stephanie Goetz reports, "It can be maddening - a frightening cough in your child prompts you to go to the ER, but the cough disappears when the doctor walks in.  This is fairly common because symptoms, like the whooping cough associated with pertussis, can improve and worsen at different times of the day."

ER docs and pediatricians are seeing more parents use their Smart Phones to record their kids coughing, take pictures of rashes and create video logs of symptoms.  In one case, the Smart Phone helped doctors diagnose whooping cough in a toddler.
