Fighting Sioux Nickname is back

Posted: Updated:

Statement from UND President Robert Kelley about Fighting Sioux nickname and logo:

In keeping with state law and the direction of North Dakota State Board of Higher Education President Grant Shaft, the University of North Dakota has resumed the use of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo for our athletic teams.  I want to reaffirm our respect for the laws of the state and the processes guaranteed under the North Dakota Constitution.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The head of North Dakota's Board of Higher Education says the board may go to court if a law requiring the University of North Dakota to revert to its Fighting Sioux nickname is restored.

Grant Shaft said Wednesday he's trying to arrange a Monday board meeting with the state attorney general to discuss the issue.

Those seeking to restore the nickname submitted petitions Tuesday seeking a referendum about whether to restore a law repealed in November that required UND to keep the Fighting Sioux name, which the NCAA deemed offensive to American Indians.

UND abandoned the name once the law was repealed.

The law would be restored until the referendum if North Dakota's secretary of state determines during an initial review there are enough signatures to warrant a vote.
