Deciding What To Do With Kirkbride Buidling

Posted: Updated:

A historical landmark in Fergus Falls could soon be contributing to the city's growth...

Most people look at the Kirkbride building and think of it as a good setting for a scary movie. While the city has had requests to do so, things haven't yet panned out. Instead, a company based out of Minneapolis wants to basically turn the grounds into a business district.

Fergus Falls requested companies who were interested in the property to submit proposals by last Wednesday. Geitso Export Management was the only developer to make an offer for the building. The company and its plan will now go through a review process over the next few moths to help the city decide whether or not the company is a good fit.

City Administrator, Mark Sievert, says, "Primarily, they wanted to see adding value. What that meant is at least over time, getting it back on the tax roles and primarily creating jobs, so bringing businesses in here and bringing people in."

Some of the businesses the company would like to put in the building are retail, restaurants and even hotels. However, there are some people against it who want to preserve the historical side of the building.

The city wants people in Fergus Falls to help them decide what to do with the Kirkbride building. By next week, they hope to have more information available to the public and ask that people give their opinion at council meetings. They plan to have a final decision by early April.
