Watterworth, Calhoun Lead Oakland Past Bison

Bethany Watterworth scored a game-high 24 points and teammate Sharise Calhoun netted 18 as Oakland University defeated North Dakota State 68-52 in a Summit league women's basketball game played Saturday, Jan. 28, before 1,605 fans in the O'Rena.

North Dakota State (7-15, 4-6 Summt League) is scheduled to play IPFW (8-14, 4-6 Summit) at 6 p.m. Central Monday, Jan. 30, in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Mastodons lost 76-66 to league-leading South Dakota State on Saturday

The Golden Grizzlies (10-9, 6-4 Summit) used an 11-0 run midway in the first half to pull away. OU rallied from a 15-10 deficit to take a 21-15 lead behind Calhoun and Watterworth. Oakland led 30-20 at halftime.

Dani DeGagne and Miki Stephenson helped to spark a comeback that saw the Bison whittle the lead to five points on several occasions the last coming at 45-40 with 11:48 left on an Abby Plucker jumper.

DeGagne scored 10 of her 12 points in the final half to share team-high scoring honors with Janae Burich. Britney Gaines scored nine points on a trio of three-pointers, while Plucker finished with eight points and game-high 11 rebounds. Hannah Linz added seven assists.

However, Watterworth and Calhoun caught fire to widen the margin. Oakland hit 20 of 23 from the foul line as 10 different players hit free throws compared to 4 of 5 for NDSU.

Watterworth scored 15 of her game-high 24 points in the second half, hitting 7 of 11 field goal attempts. Watterworth added eight rebounds.

Oakland shot 42.1 percent from the field compared to 33.3 percent for the Bison, while the Golden Grizzlies 40-37 rebounding advantage.
