Joint Chiefs Steps Down

President Obama will be on hand as Admiral Michael Mullen officially steps down as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He will be replaced by Army Chief of Staff General Martin Dempsey.

The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff serves as the principal military advisor to the president, the national security council and the secretary of defense.

The chairman's term is normally for a period of two years.
