Honoring a Fallen Hero

Posted: Updated:

The funeral for Sgt. Matthew Harmon is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Fosston High School gymnasium.

A "Matt Harmon Memorial Fund" has been established at First National Bank in Fosston. Donations may be dropped off at the bank or mailed to First National Bank, 124 W. 1st St., Fosston, MN 56542.

A group of people from the Fosston/Lengby area are asking community members to honor Sgt. Harmon by standing in his honor along US Highway 2 from Fosston to Lengby as the funeral procession travels to Lengby for his burial.

If  you're interesting in taking part, here's what organizers say you need to know:

-   Funeral begins at 2 p.m. at the Fosston High School. From 500-1,000 people expected.

-   It is difficult to determine the time the procession will leave Fosston, so all involved in this should be ready and in place at approximately 2:45 pm

-   State Highway Patrol Captain Dick Wittenberg has been contacted and has asked to pass this information along:

-   Park on approaches when possible. It might be a good idea to car pool to your location if possible – less cars on the road are safer for everyone.

-   You are not to stand on the roadway – instead, he requested that you stand at the top of the ditch just off the shoulder.

-   Please think of your own safety and the safety of others.

-   If you have a flag – bring it. If not, just your presence is an honor.

-   The Lengby VFW has ordered a small amount of flags (288) and these will be available Friday at the following locations in Lengby: the Lengby VFW, Best Things Ever, The Clinic Bar and Grill, Lengby Oil.

-   Friends of the Harmon family truly hope that the road from Hwy 2 to Lengby and the sidewalks of Lengby as well as Hwy. 2 from Fosston to Lengby will be full of people honoring this "hometown boy."

-   Please pass this on to everyone that you know that would like to be involved. Please do this today!

-   Remember to think "Safety" when you are out there.

-   Thank you for doing this small thing to honor the huge sacrifice that Matthew Harmon has given for us all.
