ORIGINAL STORY
The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office is requesting assistance from volunteers in a search for a missing 76 year old male who suffers from advanced dementia. Volunteers that are able to assist must be at least 18 years old, dressed appropriately for weather conditions, and prepared to walk with appropriate shoes or boots. Mosquito repellant may also be beneficial. Volunteers should respond to the intersection of Wood Duck Rd and Birchmont Beach Rd, and they will be taken by bus to the scene. That intersection is 15 miles east of Bemidji Rd or 4 miles west of Scenic Highway on Birchmont Beach Rd. Numerous agencies are assisting in the search, additional volunteer resources are needed to cover the large wooded area. Aerial support has also been dispatched.
Donald Hoogeven, age 76, of northern Iowa has gone missing from a location on the southeastern point of Pimushe Lake, approximately 20 miles east of Bemidji.
He was last seen by relatives at approximately 6:30 PM. Family members, Beltrami County Sheriff's deputies, assisted by Leech Lake Tribal Police and Game Wardens, a DNR enforcement officer, State Patrol, Border Patrol and friends searched at length for Mr. Hoogeven and were not able to find him. Don, or Grandpa Hogie, as he prefers to be called, is suffering from advanced dementia and was last seen wearing a red short sleeved shirt, dark colored work shoes and navy blue dress pants. He has white hair, is 5"10" and 220 lbs. He walks with a limp due to knee surgery last year. Don loves to visit with people about car washes, ice cream (formerly worked at an ice cream plant), fast pitch softball and the Army as he served in the Army in his younger years. He is originally from the southwestern tip of Minnesota and has lived in Iowa for many years. He was vacationing in the area here in Beltrami County.
The search was called off late Friday night after extensive searches of the woods and shoreline on Pimushe due to the rain and late hour. The search will resume again in the morning with air support if the weather clears and a number of agencies. Attached find the poster that our office is distributing and would appreciate all sharing, broadcasting and printing.
