While debate continues over who gets to pull the trigger on a mandatory evacuation, key details are emerging.
WHO WOULD BE EVACUATED?
Types of evacuations - voluntary vs. mandatory declaration. The city could order evacuations of small areas or the entire city (not very likely).
In a voluntary evacuation, you would be "strongly encouraged" to leave your homes. Notification would come thru ValleyNewsLive and other media and the city's CodeRED phone system.
When imminent threat to life and/or property exists a mandatory evacuation could be ordered.
We'll go live on the air and web immediately to tell you. Also, the City emergency warning sirens will sound and police would go door-to-door to notify people.
HOW TO EVACUATE
Most people need to get to the nearest Interstate or major artery road and orderly leave.
NOTE: If you live South-Central Fargo (Main Avenue to Interstate 94), listen carefully to evacuation instructions, you may be sent to Minnesota via Main Avenue. That will only happen if the river is at or below 43.25 feet.
WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO EVACUATE
Prepare to take care of yourself - if you get stranded, no one will bring you food or water, you may lose water and sewer for long periods of time, so no showers or going to the bathroom.
