Twenty-four women and relay teams qualified to the NCAA Outdoor Championships through the NCAA Preliminary Rounds format. In the steeplechase, two rounds will be contested, a semifinal and a final. The semifinal will consist of two heats with 12 competitors in each. The top five from each heat plus the next two fastest times (12 total) will advance to the final.
The top eight finishers in all events will earn first team All-American honors, places 9 through 16 will be named second team All-Americans, and all other national meet competitors will receive honorable mention All-American status.
Laura Hermanson is the highest national-meet finisher in NDSU’s Division I history, taking second place in the 800 meters at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Teschuk placed fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the steeplechase last year, running a then-personal best 9:42.15. Courtney Frerichs of New Mexico, the national leader in the event, is the lone returning athlete who finished in front of Teschuk last season.
Only Two Steeplechase Races
Teschuk has only run two 3,000m steeplechase races this season, competing in the event at the Summit League Outdoor Championships on May 13 and at the NCAA West Prelims on May 27.
Teschuk owns six first-team All-America honors in her career – four indoor, one outdoor and one in cross country. Her highest national-meet finish came in the indoor 3,000m this year when she took fourth place.
Teschuk was a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree for the 2015-16 season. She owns a 3.72 cumulative grade point average with a major in psychology.
Teschuk’s personal-best time of 9:40.07 in the steeplechase came last August at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China, as she represented her native Canada. That performance was well under the Olympic qualifying standard of 9:45.00.
Teschuk is the lone Bison woman to ever qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track – and she has now qualified twice for each.
Teschuk is scheduled to race the steeplechase at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Edmonton, Alberta, on Friday, July 8.
