FARGO, N.D. (www.gobison.com) -- Cheyenne Garcia and Amanda Grable each hit home runs, and Krista Menke scattered four hits as North Dakota State University defeated the University 4-1 in a Summit League softball game played Saturday, April 4, before 177 spectators at the Ellig Sports Complex. The Bison won two of three games to take the series and stay in first place in the league standings.
NDSU (29-7, 7-2 Summit League) is scheduled to host South Dakota State (12-15, 3-3 Summit League) in a Summit League three-game series on April 11 and April 12 at the Ellig Sports Complex. The Jackrabbits won two of three games at Omaha this weekend.
Similiar to Friday, Menke and the Bison came back from a first inning deficit against South Dakota (11-20-1, 3-3 Summit League). The Coyotes took an early 1-0 advantage when Yvon Minogue hit a lead-off home run to center field.
North Dakota State bounced back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. Logan Moreland reached on an infield single to shortstop and stole second. Cheyenne Garcia then hit a line drive off the scoreboard in center for her team-leading 10th home run of the season. Moreland led the Bison with two hits.
The Bison scored a single run in the second inning. Jackie Stifter started things with a single to right field. Stifter advanced to third on sacrificebunts by Joei Samper and Katie Shoultz, and scored on Alex Sobrero's triple to right center.
Amanda Grable took care of the scoring in the third with a two-out, solo home run to center field to push the NDSU lead to 4-1. It was Grable's fourth home run of the season.
Menke came back from the first inning home run by limiting South Dakota to three singles and a walk over final six frames. She struck out seven to improve to 21-2 on the season.
Madison Frain (5-8) picked up the loss for the Coyotes. Frain struck out two and walked two. Minogue finished with a pair of hits for USD.
