Small Business Forced To Close Due To New Development Planned

A new hotel and restaurant in Detroit Lakes means that one unique, small business will be closing its doors and torn down to make way for the new development. Valley News Live reports on how one business - that introduced our region to a fun, summer water sport in lakes country, will be moving on.

The yellow beach shack that sits on West Lake Drive in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota has been a water sport and clothing shop along with a local hangout for the past 4 years.

25-year old owner Ben Magnuson started renting out paddle boards to lake-goers in northern Minnesota. Its an activity that had never really been here before.

"It is cool to bring it back from Hawaii and share our love for the lake with everyone here," said Magnuson.

Customer Kody Krautkremer says he tried paddle boarding when Sol first opened and is sad the local hang out will be gone after this summer.

"Coming from an area like Moorhead with no lakes, it is easy. I don't have to carry a boat around, all I have to do is strap the board to the top or rent it from here," said Krautkremer.

This wasn't a total shock to owner Magnuson: he rents this space and says they knew it was possible the property would be sold.

Not all in the area are keeping as calm about Sol closing though. We broke the news to customer Jace Engelstad. He and his friends hang out at sol regularly playing sand volleyball.

"That sucks actually, I am mad kind of and I didn't know that actually and I come here a lot," said Jace Engelstad

Sol's owners say they are sad that their business will be closing but thankful they had the opportunity to chase their dream and bring one of their passions back to the area.

"This has been a great opportunity to have a business in our hometown and to share our passion for the water," said Magnuson.

Magnuson his brother don't know if they will start another business in the area. They do plan to keep selling their sunglasses and clothing. "Sol stoked on Life " wooden sun glasses are being sold at surf shops across the nation.

Sol is open now until the end of summer.
