Is a broken tanker car wheel to blame for Heimdal derailment?

Sources confirm to Valley News Live that the wheel in this picture may be to blame for Wednesday's derailment in Heimdal North Dakota. The photo was sent to the Valley News Live newsroom by sources who wished to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to speak on the matter. Despite employee concerns, a BNSF spokesman would not confirm or deny the wheel in this picture is to blame for the crash nor would they confirm or deny that this wheel came from today's derailment. Another spokesperson reached by phone this evening said the broken wheel was a possibility that is being considered but nothing had been determined.

In an exclusive interview tonight on 6:30 POV on KX4 North Dakota congressman Kevin Cramer told host Chris Berg that broken wheels are common causes for derailments such as this. Cramer however made it clear he did not know what caused the accident and was not shown the picture.

The train was carrying Bakken crude oil when it derailed this morning around 7:30. 10 cars exploded and burned through much of the day. The town of Heimdal was evacuated.
