MAPLETON, N.D. (Valley News Live) - UPDATE:
A man is behind bars facing four felonies after allegedly raping a female employee at Gordy's Travel Plaza in Mapelton, North Dakota.
The Cass County Sheriff's Office says customers at the travel plaza called 911 after hearing pleas for help Wednesday morning. Sheriffs deputies had to kick in a locked bathroom door where the woman and 35-year-old, Abdulrahman Ali were.
Ali was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, terrorizing and gross sexual imposition.
The woman was taken to a Fargo hospital to be treated for her injuries.
Regular customers at the Mapleton Travel Plaza say they were shocked to hear of the early morning assault of an employee on Wednesday.
"Everybody know everybody here so, a lot of us stop here a couple times a day, its the only store for miles. So it is just shocking, I mean you get to know every customer that comes in here," said Jeremy Johnson of Colfax, North Dakota.
Johnson works near Gordy's Travel Plaza and he says he visits the plaza everyday. He didn't know what exactly happened when he drove by Wednesday morning, but he says he was concerned.
"It was hard to see an ambulance and the Sheriff had everything cornered off. You hate to see this kind of stuff," said Johnson.
Johnson says he learned of the alleged rape from the the Valley News Live text alert and immediately became worried about the two store employees that he sees everyday.
"These are two motherly type ladies, you walk in and they know your name and they are pretty good cooks. They make good lunch here too," stated Johnson.
Other people, along with Johnson, say they would never expect this serious crime happening here near a small town like Mapleton.
"There is too much of this stuff now a days," said Johnson.
The Cass County Sheriff's Department says the investigation is ongoing and are not sure whether or not it is gang related. Deputies say Ali is the only suspect in this crime.
Many viewers asked us to look into Abdulrahman Ali's criminal history and whether or not he immigrated to the area.
Ali's criminal history consists of seven traffic violations and one trespassing charge. He has a Fargo address but as for his immigration status, that is not known yet.
There is no public database that allows people to look up people's immigration status.
Valley News Live has tried calling Lutheran Social Services and reached out to the Department of Homeland Security.
Lutheran Social Service CEO Jessica Thomasson says they do not give out information on their clients, liking their regulation to HIPPA laws. Thomasson adds that not every immigrant in the area is associated with LSS.
