Body Recovered from Red River

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: Victim has been identified as 23-year-old Steven Franek of Moorhead, Minnesota.

Water rescue crews have recovered the body of man who tried to swim across the Red River in north Fargo Wednesday morning.

The Coroner's office says they have not been able to identify the victim.  Police plan to look through their records but may have to release a description to the public.  The body has been taken to a local funeral home and will then be transferred to the State Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy.

Fargo Police say the man was spotted acting suspicious near a downtown gas station, when they tried to talk with him he ran off.

The man jumped off the 1st Avenue bridge onto the bank of the river.  Police say he ran along the bank then tried to swim across to Moorhead.  Officers tried to get the man to come back to land but he refused.

Moorhead police were also on the scene this morning and tried to throw the man a life ring but he couldn't grab it.  Investigators say officers then saw the man go under the water and he didn't come back up.

Fargo Fire, Fargo Police, Moorhead Police and the Valley Water Rescue team with boats, sonar and divers were all called in for the search, rescue and eventual recovery effort.

Divers found the man's body about 7:00 Wednesday morning.  Police say he was about 200 yards from where they last saw him above water.

Police officials tell Valley News Live the temperature of the water this morning was very cold and hypothermia likely set in quickly.
