U.S. Sen. Heitkamp on Senate Committee Hearing considering DHS Secretary Nominee

WASHINGTON (Valley News Live) U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp issued the following statement following a hearing in the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs, of which she is a member, considering the nomination of General John F. Kelly to lead the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“The safety of North Dakota’s communities is paramount. As a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, I’ve worked to sharpen the focus on security concerns that matter most to North Dakotans, which are particularly important for the potential secretary of the Homeland Security Department to understand,” said Heitkamp. “Both through my meeting with General Kelly last week and yesterday’s hearing, I stressed the urgency of implementing my bills which were signed into law last month to review security challenges along the Northern Border and provide training and support to our first responders. We also discussed the need to combat human trafficking and address the unique security challenges in rural communities. General Kelly has shown his strong understanding of these issues. He is also a proven leader from not only from his decades of military service and experience leading our nation’s operations in South America and Central America, but from his deep-rooted knowledge of the threats to our nation as well as the challenges our service members face in combat and when they return home from service. I will support his nomination and I look forward to working with him to keep our communities strong and safe.”
