FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) North Dakota U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp has officially announce she will be running for re-election in 2018.
Heitkamp, a Democrat, made the announcement Wednesday morning on her brother Joel Heitkamp's radio program on KFGO.
The news comes a day after she and a bi-partisan group of senators spent an evening at the White House talking with President Donald Trump about tax reform.
In a statement Heitkamp says it was a good discussion and that she welcomes any chance to talk with the president about issues important to North Dakota.
Heitkamp was first elected to the Senate in 2012. She beat U.S. Representative Rick Berg by less than 3,000 votes.
So far one Republican, North Dakota State Senator Tom Campbell from Grafton, has announced plans to run against the incumbent.
