GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Valley News Live) - The mystery behind a loud noise reported to police on Friday night in the Adams Drive / East Prairiewood Drive neighborhoods has been solved.

The Grand Forks Police Department released a statement on Saturday saying a rural Grand Forks resident contacted them and admitted he was using Tannerite on his property and this is what caused the explosion heard within the city Friday night at approximately 9:35 pm.

Tannerite is a type of binary reactive (exploding) rifle target system. When struck by a high velocity rifle round Tannerite will explode causing the loud detonation heard within the city. When used for its intended purpose, Tannerite is a legal substance.
