Police arrest suspect who fled after police chase in Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. (Valley News Live) UPDATE: Moorhead Police tell Valley News Live that they now have in custody the man they were looking for after he escaped during an overnight chase.

It started around 1:45 a.m. when officers tried to pull over a vehicle at the 8th Street exit on I-94, but the driver took off.

They found the car he ditched near Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church.

Officers tracked the suspect to a south Fargo hotel and arrested 52-year-old Nils Njus around 4:30 a.m.

He's in the Cass County Jail, awaiting extradition to Minnesota.

ORIGINAL STORY: Moorhead Police are looking for the driver of a car who they say took off during a traffic stop early Friday morning.

They had pulled him over, but say he sped away as an officer approached the vehicle.

Police chased the driver onto the interstate before the suspect exited on 20th Street near Triumph Lutheran Berthren Church.

By the time officers arrived, the suspect had abandoned the vehicle.

Police say they're looking for an adult white man with a beard.
