WYNDMERE, N.D. (Valley News Live) - Missing mail is making a lot of people angry in a small town in North Dakota.
Someone from Wyndmere contacted our Whistleblower Hotline asking us to find out what is going on. They say packages, birthday money, and important documents are being opened, and sometimes stolen.
Victims say the problem has been going on since May. We spoke to over a dozen victims, but no one wanted to go on camera. They say Wyndmere is a small town, and fear what might happen.
"Anything that has any kind of value just isn't showing up," says a man who lives in Wyndmere.
A truck driver told us he has lost thousands of dollars in revenue because important documents never came in the mail. Another man says his bank statements were delivered, but someone opened them first. A few families say money from birthday or graduation cards just disappeared.
The man who did not want to be identified says there are missing packages too. "The girl said she had $200.00 of makeup in there and it never showed up, and UPS could show where it was scanned into the post office saying the post office had it."
People we talked to have complained to the post office, and reported it to officials, but say they want answers. "Yeah, someone needs to stop it, and find out who is stealing the mail. And whoever is stealing the mail needs to be charged to the fullest extent, I mean it's a federal offence, and not just get a slap on the wrist and lose your job."
The US Postal Service told us they are aware of the situation. In a statement they said, “We continue to work very closely with our law enforcement partners at the Office of Inspector General and the US Postal Service Inspection Service to ensure that sanctity. Postal Officials are working to notify impacted customers and will work with those affected as possible.”
