High school shooting leaves 2 students dead

AZTEC, NM (CBS) Three people are dead including two students after a school shooting at a high school in New Mexico.

Aztec Police say calls started coming into the dispatch center around 8 a.m. Thursday morning. When officers arrived, they had to break through a window in a door to gain access to the Aztec High School which was on lockdown.

Officials were working on clearing the buildings before the shooter was reported down, according to San Juan County CEO Kim Carpenter.

The Governor of New Mexico addressed the community of Aztec Thursday afternoon commending first responders for their bravery, calling the Chief of Police one of her heroes.

A candlelight vigil honoring the victims was held at a local park Thursday evening.

The Public Education Department will make one hundred twenty thousand dollars in emergency funding available to the school district to help with costs.
