Healthier Me: Different ways to connect with your Sanford Health doctor

When it comes to your health or the health of your child, it can be confusing when you aren't sure where to go for help. Do you go to the walk-in clinic or ER?

"The first thing I tell my patient is that when they are sick, I want to be the one to see them. Bottom line is sometimes you really have to go with your gut," said Sanford Family Medicine Physician Dr. Ann Safo.

If your doctor isn't in, Dr. Safo says if you have an urgent, but not life-threatening, illness or injury, the walk in clinic is your best choice. If you are having life threatening emergencies, you need to go to the ER.

However, Sanford Health is making your decision a little bit easier with lots of options to get you the right treatment.

When you have general health questions and need answers after hours, My Sanford Nurse is your 24-hour nurse phone line where nurses will assess your symptoms.

"They do a great job. They are very capable and will help direct you to the right place and they are available 24/7," said Dr. Safo.

They even offer video visits, where you can meet face to face with a medical team without having to go in.

"Video visits, it's a great way! You can use your handheld device or laptop at home and have a visit with the provide over the internet. It's a great resource and you don't even have to leave your house," said. Dr. Safo

While technology is a great way to connect with your doctor, Dr. Safo wants to remind you for any medical emergencies dial 911.
