Fargo man lucky to be alive after being forced to spend the night in a deer stand during blizzard

BECKER COUNTY, MN (Valley News Live) A 54 year-old Fargo man caught in the blizzard survived by spending a night in a deer stand just outside of Detroit Lakes.

Becker County Sheriff’s said Michael James Tye was trying to hitchhike Wednesday night when the blizzard rolled in and was forced to seek shelter in the stand.

Authorities said Tye was able to call 911 from a cell phone Thursday morning around 9:30 a.m. to report he was in need of assistance because his feet were frozen.

They say he was not dressed for the weather when they found him and temperatures were about 18 degrees below zero with winds gusting up to 30 mph. Also approximately three inches of snow had fallen adding to his dilemma.

Tye was taken to St. Mary’s-Essentia hospital, where it was reported he was in “good condition.”
