The 23-year-old excels in the sport of skeleton, where competitors drive a one-man sled headfirst down an ice track. He's ranked ninth in the country, and he's been accepted into the yearlong Olympic residency program at Lake Placid, New York.

Schulz is aiming to become North Dakota's third native Winter Olympian. He would join Don Barcome Junior of Grand Forks, who was a member of the 2002 curling team, and Ken Purpur of Grand Forks, who played on the 1956 hockey team that won a silver medal.
