
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Interior Department says it's ready to start a program to help Native American tribes buy parcels of reservation land that have accumulated multiple owners. The program will start with reservations including the Pine Ridge in South Dakota and involve 10 to 12 tribes by year's end.
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Former South Dakota legislator Stanley A. Johnson has died. Gov. Dennis Daugaard says Johnson died Saturday. He was 88 and served in the House of Representatives from 1968 to 1977.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A man convicted of commercial sex trafficking in South Dakota has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. Fifty-9-year-old Ronald Bonestroo of Iowa was accused in February 2011 of answering an online advertisement posted by police as part of a sting operation and trying to pay for sex with what he believed would be 14-year-old girls.
TYNDALL, S.D. (AP) - Trial has begun for a Nebraska couple accused of burning down a steakhouse they owned in the South Dakota town of Springfield for insurance money. Charles and Kimberly Johnson pleaded not guilty to second-degree arson and reckless burning in the 2010 fire that destroyed their restaurant and another business and damaged a third. Each could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
