Property Tax Amendment Goes to ND Secretary of State

Posted: Updated:

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) _ Supporters of a proposed constitutional amendment to eliminate North Dakota property taxes have turned in petitions to put the idea on the ballot. The measure was approved for circulation almost a year ago. Supporters had to turn in their paperwork by early next week. They brought almost 1,000 petitions containing more than 27,000 names to Secretary of State Al Jaeger's office on Friday. The measure's leader is Charlene Nelson of Casselton. The amendment abolishes property taxes in North Dakota, starting Jan. 1. The Legislature would have to figure out a way to replace the property tax revenues that local governments would lose. Jaeger now has 35 days to check the petitions and make sure they have enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. The petitions need at least 26,904 names.
